We've had birdfeeders for a few years, but I have not kept them filled due to a little problem...squirrels. They will eat an entire feeder full of seeds in half a day or less!!! So I've tried something new and it seems to work. I spray the seeds and feeders with a hot sauce/water mixtures and it seems to be working well so far. I've enjoyed watching the birds, especially since it snowed over the weekend and they are more active at the feeders and easier to see. We have a great place to watch the birds and I'll post photos later this week.
For now I wanted to post a list of birds that I identified at the feeders yesterday.
Caroline Chickadee
Blue Jay
Northern Cardinal
Song Sparrow
White-Throated Sparrow
Red-Breasted Nuthatch
Tufted Titmouse
Pilated Woodpecker-more on them later
Red-Headed Woodpecker

Great photos, Jenny! Was that before we were there? I enjoyed meeting you and the girls.
Jenny, We used to have the same problem with squirrels. Several years ago my parents gave us a spring-loaded 'squirrel-proof' feeder which shuts when the squirrels sits at the feeder trough. Unfortunately it didn't prevent the squirrels from hanging off the roof to eat. After several years of fighting them, my son rigged up another spring on the roof which shuts when they hang off the roof. Now I watch the birds eat and the squirrels try unsuccessfully to get the food. If they do eventually get in, I will try your spray.
